This surreal vintage engraving depicts the poet Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321) with his love Beatrice, transported to the moon to illustrate Dante’s depiction of Paradise in the Divine Comedy. Engraved after the 16th century artwork of Giulio Clovio (1498 – 1578). It was published in an 1873 history of Renaissance art and is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steven Wynn Photography.
